Tradition Melarung Ongkek Of Tenggerese

Based from the legend, Tengger hereditary Kasada preserve the procession ceremony held at Poten (a kind of temple) in the sea of sand area and the foothills of Bromo crater of Bromo. Promptly at 0:00 am, people began to gather in Poten to witness the inauguration and blessing of the people of the shaman. Shamans, in this case refers to the leaders in the field of religious people, who usually led the ritual.

Before dawn at 4:00 am, ready to transport ongkek Tengger (container) containing offerings that will dilarung to the crater of Bromo. These offerings initially only in the form of agricultural produce such as bananas, pumpkins, chilies, corn, and fruit. However, now is not rare that include crackers, chips to the children’s favorite snacks are usually sold in shops. Promptly at 5:00 pm, the carrier ongkek started to climb hundreds of stairs to the top of the Bromo. There, hundreds of people already waiting for throwing a variety of offerings to the Bromo crater as a symbol of sacrifice by their ancestors. Offerings that were thrown all kinds, such as vegetables, fruits, money, chickens, up to buffalo.

Funny thing is, on the lips of craters there are a number of beggars who spread a cloth, and using bag nets, they tried to arrest citizens offerings thrown. On the other hand, some residents tried to fight Tengger offerings placed in front of the stairs. After that, the former offering any rubbish strewn everywhere.
But we must continue to preserve the tradition that has been rooted in the psyche of the Tengger people. In addition, together with local government, will be pursued additional facilities such as binoculars at some point in the region of Mount Bromo. Diving in Cemeluk Karangasem

Divers on a tight schedule could dive Cemeluk in the morning, and the Tulamben wreck-just a few kilonieters away-in the afternoon, But these are both excellent dive spots, so why rush? Cemeluk-sometimes called Amed-offers the best variety of fish life we have seen in all of Bali. In this regard it matches even the teeming reefs of Manado and eastern Indonesia.Cemeluk is just off Bali’s main east coast highway passes through Klungkung, then Candi Dasa, then swings inland past Karangasem skirting 1,175 meter Mt. Seraya, Bali’s easternmost mountain.  Just before it reaches the coast again, about 10 kilometers before Tulamben, a paved side road from the little town of Culik drops directly to the coast at Amed, kilometers away. From Amed, the paved road turns right and passes a long stretch of traditional salt works. Two kilometers from Amed, you’re in Cerneluk, a fairly small bay with a beach of black, volcanic sand, crowded with dozens of color jukung, local outrigger fishing canoes powered by sails or small outboards.

The reef off Cemeluk curves around a rock outcropping just east of town. We took a jukung, out into the bay, and dropped into a very slight current pushing us southeast along the reef. At about 8 meters we came down on an extensive spread of staghorn Acropora teeming with with damselfishes and cardinalfishes. A short slope led to a coral wall, where we dropped to 43 meters, hanging there about 8-10 meters above the sandy bottom. The wall was magic. Schools of fish of several species cascaded down  the wall or took the electric stairs back up in orderly, two-way traffic. The numbers were staggering, the best we have seen in Bali and only rarely matched or surpassed to the east. The schools included black triggerfish, lots of banner fish, black snappers, pyramid butterflies and countless others. Further off from the wall, the usual school of yellowtail fusiliers kept an eye on proceedings. According to Wally Siagian, my stellar dive guide, by beginning our dive towards the southeast part of Cemeluk Bay we left the best coral formations behind, although there were still impressive outcrops along our 200-oddmeter journey, covered with sponges, sea fans and crinoids. One sponge sheltered a small lionfish, and in another a wellcamouflaged tassled scorpionfish would have passed unnoticed except for Wally’s sharp eyes.

Towards the end of dive, the dense growth of sponges and gorgonians created a tunnel between two of the outcrops. Inside, it was wall-to-wall with life. Large barrel sponges poked out from clearings in this forest. Acouple of mean-looking Titan triggerfish eyed us with undisguised hate, but refrained from charging. A clown triggerfish approached, then fled. On a small sandy patch next to an out crop, a little juvenile blue ribbon eel (the juveniles are black stood his ground bravely. The larger fish included a  longnose emperor, a patrolling giant trevally, and several bluefin trevallys. Two very large tuna both over a meter and in the 30-40 kilo range, shot by quickly. As we finished the dive, we saw a mismatched pair of Napoleon wrasse: a very large adult and a very small juvenile. Wally often sees reef white-tip sharks here, although we saw none on this day. Our visibility was around 10 meters, but can double under the right conditions. The area is calm year around with only very occasional surge and high current conditions.

Gilimanuk Bay

Gilmanuk’s beaches are truly pristine, and there is a wide range of them : coral beaches, white and black underwater coral awaits anyone willing to dive in and go for a snorkel. There are two small islands in the bay, which are barely more than sandbars – Pulau kalong ( Bat Island ) and Pulau Burung ( Bird Island ). There is also a museum containing pre-Hindu archeology. The villages around Gilimanuk contain a mixture of Balinese, Javanese, Madurese and Bugis architecture unique to Bali. No less beautiful are the various boats belonging to these ethnic groups.

Further south, at Candikusuma, there are two temples dedicated to the legendary figure of Dang Hyang Nirartha Indra Kusuma temple and Taman Sumur Bulus. Locals are how in 1897 two Dutch officers were attracted to the place  when they saw a light coming from the earth. It turned out to be a kris ( a supernatural dagger ). Candikusuma beach is known for its beautiful black sand and the gentle hills permeating the beach.

Inland from Melaya are the parallel Christian communities of Palasari ( Catholic ) and Blimbingsari ( Protestant ), built at the beginning of the century in a settlement area for Balinese who had converted to Christianity. Hills and paddy fields surround the villages. Their uniqueness, however, lies in the cultural cocktail present in churches, which mix both Gothic and Balinese architectural styles.

Delodbrawah Beach is a black sand beach, which used to be a swamp ( brawah , believed to be a favorite crocodile haunt. Believe it or not, the sand from this beach is said to cure rheumatism. To the north of the beach is mendoyo in Negara. One of the best racing grounds for the Mekepung here is found here – it can even be used in the rainy season.

Rambutsiwi Temple is on a cliff top overlooking a breathtaking panorama of paddy fields on one side and the black sandy beach on the other. Stairs allow people to get safely down onto the beach. Two caves overlook the sea, boats and seabirds hovering above. This spot is a favorite hangout for painters. The temple itself was built by Dang Hyang Nirartha. According to the legend, he made a gift of his hair to the temple. Hence the name Rambut Siwi, which literally means”Hair worship”.

Medewi beach is a small resort in the southeast of Jembrana ( about midway between Gilimanuk and Denpasar ), just off the main road at Airsatang. Waves from three to seven meters in height make for perfect surfing. Small black stones are scattered over the black sandy beach, providing an unusual scene at sunset.
